Harvard Glee Club presents Bonhoeffer, a choral-theatre work – New England Premiere

Saturday, April 11th, 2026

Bonhoeffer, a choral-theatre work by composer Thomas Lloyd, is a profound and immersive musical journey tracing the life, thought, and witness of German theologian and resistance figure Dietrich Bonhoeffer. Conceived as a concert piece in a theatrical context, Bonhoeffer unfolds through a series of reflective meditations and dramatic scenes—drawn from Bonhoeffer’s own poetry, letters, and emblematic moments of his life under Nazism—set for men’s chamber choir, a trio of women soloists, piano trio, and percussion.

Rather than a staged drama, Bonhoeffer uses its rich choral writing and instrumental textures to evoke the spiritual depth and moral complexity of its subject. Throughout, the ensemble’s sound—part prayer, part contemplation, part unflinching testimony—invites listeners into the inner world of a thinker whose commitment to faith and justice led him back into the heart of danger.
